Summary, Etc. Note: |
Summary: "This Atlas presents the results of aerial surveys undertaken to determine the principal wintering areas used by Nearctic shorebirds on the coast of Mexico. The surveys were carried out over a 3-year period in January/February 1992, 1993, and 1994 and covered some 17 000 km of the Mexican coastline. The surveys covered the outer coastline, as well as nearshore lagoons, inlets, and other habitats. More than 1.47 million shorebirds were counted during the surveys, with totals for small, medium-sized, and large species of 852 000 (57.9%), 219 000 (14.9%), and 334 000 (22.7%), respectively; a further 66 000 (4.5%) shorebirds were unidentified. Most (1 346 000, 91.5%) occurred on the Pacific coast, with only 125 000 (8.5%) on the east coast. The surveys identified internationally important coastal wintering areas used by various categories and species of shorebirds, and a list of 29 key sites is presented."--pub. desc. |
