Abstract: Birds imported into the United States 1970 are tabulated by species and the numbers are compared to those for 1968 and 1969. The accuracy of this report is believed to be substantially greater than for the previous years. The number of birds imported in 1970 increased by about 45 percent over 1969, but much of that increase results from more extensive declarations of domestic canaries. Importation of birds other than canaries increased by about 11 percent, with more than half of that increase accounted for by psittacine birds. More than 937,000 individuals of 745 species were reported in 1970. This tallies imported birds by the country of origin. Eleven nations account for over 95 percent of all birds imported. Approximately 73 percent of all birds imported are of wild origin, the others having been propagated in captivity. |
