Summary, Etc. Note: |
Abstract: The toxicants 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM) and 2',5-dichloro-4'-nitrosalicylanilide (Bayer 73) were tested individually and together for toxicity to fourth instar Chironomus tentans in laboratory static tests at 22 (plus or minus) degrees Centigrade. As water hardness increased, toxicity of the materials individually and in mixtures decreased. Generally, the toxic effect of mixtures of TFM and Bayer 73 was additive; synergistic toxicity was apparent only in soft water at exposures of 24 to 72 hours. Immobility was not coincident with death in chironomides. Considerably greater concentrations of toxicant were required to kill than to immobilize. |
