Abstract: This paper discusses the red wolf's (Canis rufus) status, distribution and ecology; and describes and differentiates the red wolf from the closely related canids. Difficulties in distinguishing red wolves from coyotes (Canis latrans) and red wolf-coyote hybrids have resulted in much confusion over the range and status of the red wolf. |

Abstract: The paper is based on information gathered as part of the Bureau's red wolf program which began in 1968. The purposes of the program are: (1) to determine the red wolf's range, population size, food habits, and ecology ; (2) to determine the actural extent of red wolf predation on live stock, and (3) to gain the understanding and cooperation of local people throughout the red wolf's range in the effort to preserve the species. |
