Description: |
Sooty tern egg at a nesting colony at Wilkes Island in 2013 during an NWRC seabird survey. Nesting colony is about 3/4 mile away from Wake Island airfield on the approach path. Seabird surveys are only conducted when no airplanes are scheduled to land. Polynesian rats have since invaded Wilkes Island and are preying on sooty tern chicks. NWRC is actively involved in eradicating rodents on Wake Island |
