Previous studies confirmed that two parallel 8 foot fences were 100% effective in eliminating contact between cervids. However, this type of fencing can be cost prohibitive. This study looked at the effectiveness of combining 1-8 foot tall woven wire fence with strands of electric fence to determine if contact between cervids on both sides of the fence could be eliminated. Adding electric wire to an existing fence could be accomplished exponentially quicker in a emergency disease response situation. 3201-NWRC staff build fences, 2084- Research Biologist Kurt Vercauteren prepares electric fence. 2096- Bull Elk tests electric fence. 2583, 3120 and 3125-Elk during the trial |
