National Wildlife Disease Program photos:Avian influenza, Michigan. Description from Tom Hutton: WDB Hutton and Missouri Department of Conservation personnel cooperated in the capture and AI sampling of 100 lesser snow and Ross's geese via two rocket shots on Schell Osage Conservation Area. Although both shots were taken on the same day chronologically, they were literally "polar" opposites weather-wise. The first shot was taken with temperatures in the low 60's with little or no wind, and the second with 20 degree temperatures and a 20 mph northwest wind. The geese must have been really hungry for corn because they were back on the bait 30 minutes after the first shot, and some never entirely left the field after the second shot. |
