Abstract: Antimycin A, an antifungal antibiotic, has been suggested for use as a fish toxicant. Preliminary tests were made to evaluate its effects at different concentrations on 24 species of freshwater fish in the laboratory and 25 species in outdoor pools. Responses of a select group of other animals and aquatic plants are discussed. The antibiotic is a powerful fish toxicant. Antimycin A degrades rapidly in water, especially in the presence of free hydroxide. Further studies are planned on the performance of antimycin A against various life stages of fish and other aquatic animals, and in waters of differing qualities and temperatures. The process of detoxification and the fate of residues deserve further attention. |
