transparent Summary, Etc. Note: Abstract: Oxytetracycline (Terramycin) is currently the most widely used antibiotic in fish therapy. A common method of administering oxytetracycline to fish is to mix the antibiotic with feed. For this method to be successful (1) the drug must be uniformly distributed throughout the feed; (2) the drug is present in such quantity that the therapeutic level is available in the quantity of food consumed; (3) the drug is reasonably stable in the finished feed; (4) the feed is palatable to the fish and must be consumed; (5) the feed composition does not affect the availability of the drug; and (6) the drug doesn't leach into the water before the fish consumes the feed. In addition to tissue residue levels, initial results suggested that leaching of antibiotic might deserve further investigation and this investigation was undertaken to determine if significant leaching occurred, and if so, the efforts of selected environmental factors on this phenomenon. This study determines the effects of pellet surface / volume ratio, water temperature, and hydrogen ion concentration of the medium on leaching.
